GETTING TO BILBAO

Bilbao International Airport

The city of Bilbao can be easily reached through its international airport. There are direct connections to several European hubs: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Dublin, Frankfurt, Geneva, Istanbul, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Rome...

Regular bus service Airport-Bilbao

Buses from the airport run from 06:00 a 07:40 every 20 minutes (:20/:40/:00), from. 07:40 to 19:40 every 15 minutes (:10/:25/:40/:55) and from 19:40 to 00:00 every 20 minutes (:00/:20/:40).

You can find the bus stop at the rightmost end of the terminal. If you walk to your right once you leave the baggage reclaim area, without crossing the crystal wall, you will find a green booth where you can buy your bus ticket to Bilbao for EUR 3.

Another option is to buy a Barik travel card at the same booth. The card costs EUR 3 and the minimum charge is EUR 5. You can get very significant discounts in public transport with this card, starting from the bus ride from the airport to the city centre, which only costs EUR 0,57. (For more information about the Barik card, see the section PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN BILBAO below.)

You will find the bus stop right in front of the ticket booth, after crossing the crystal wall. The bus number A3247 is displayed on the front of the bus. This bus has four stops in Bilbao: Alameda Recalde, 14; Gran Vía, 46; Gran Vía, 74; and the Bilbao Intermodal station.

If you want to use the bus to go to the airport on your departure, note that buses from Bilbao Intermodal run from 05:00 a 08:00 every 20 minutes (:20/:40/:00), from 08:00 to 18:00 every 15 minutes (:00/:15/:30/:45) and from 18:00 to 22:00 every 20 minutes (:00/:20/:40). Buses leave from floor -2 of the station, at the same place where they arrive from the airport. There are also stops at Gran Vía, 79; Moyua Plaza (Ogasuna/Hacienda); and Alameda Recalde, 11.

Taxi Airport-Bilbao

There is a taxi stand in front of the arrivals area of the airport.

Bilbao Intermodal Station

Bilbao is connected by bus with many other Spanish cities. All buses leave from/arrive to the floor -2 of the Bilbao Intermodal station, previously known as Termibus, which is situated near the city centre. (External link to the plan of the Intermodal station).

The San Mamés station of Bilbao underground (Metro Bilbao) can be easily reached from the Intermodal station. You have to go one level up the bus stands by using the escalator. Then turn left right after going through the turnstile gates, and follow the (small) exit sign hanging from the ceiling.

Walk ahead for around 50 metres until you get to a hall with indications towards the underground station painted on the columns. Be aware that there is a train station to the left of this hall that has nothing to do with the underground network.

If you simply want to get out to the street, you only have to go up a few stairs from this hall.

PUBLIC  TRANSPORT IN BILBAO

The city is small and walk-friendly and it is also very well communicated by affordable public transport. If you intend to use public transport, instead of buying a single ticket every time, we advise you to buy a Barik card

You can buy it from the vending machines or the ticket offices in the underground stations. The card costs EUR 3  and after you buy it, you need to buy credit (at least EUR 5). This card can be used for all public transport: underground, tram and buses, both city buses and buses connecting towns inside the province, for instance to go to the beach.
